What’s The Big Deal With Toast?

Summer-peach-cheese-toastThe Mill Loaf 9749Apparently this year’s food trend is toast!  Really?  Toast?  I decided to find out what the big deal is about and there is no better place than The Mill in San Francisco.  In case you haven’t heard, their toast is $4 dollars each and they are selling out like hot cakes (or toasts?).  The Mill has created quite a buzz around the nation for their posh toast (probably due to $$$$).  But I must admit, it is damn good.

So what does a $4 dollar toast look like? The Mill Cinnamon Toast 8134No, there is no caviar or uni on it.  They offer the typical toppings of cream cheese, butter, jam and so on.The Mill Toast Menu 8114The toast’s heart and soul is the bread (from Josey Baker Bread). For $6+ you can get an entire loaf which makes about 8-10 thick toasts.  What a steal!  It tastes just as good as the store and you can get really creative with your toppings.   They have a wide range of loaves to choose from.  So far, my fav is the Dark Mountain Rye (freshly milled whole rye, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, freshly milled corn, sourdough culture, sea salt).

But why is it trendy right now?

So after doing some research, it comes down to our growing “obsession and fetishzation of food.  Every meal is special and important.  Every dish have to elevated, revered, and broadcast—even something as pedestrian as toast.source from The New Yorker

It’s not necessary a bad thing.  We are what we eat.  I think it’s great to feed yourself with quality food.  The Mill definitely offers amazing quality toasts. The Mill Loaf 8128This kind of makes me think of the KonMari philosophy – surround ourselves with things (including food) that SPARK JOY.  Something as simple as eating a good toast can make you a very happy person.

And thanks to this new trend, there are millions of toast topping recipes online.  Here are some of my everyday comfort toppings:

  • Avocado hummus with salt and pepper
  • Nutella with banana
  • Honey cottage cheese with seasonal fruits
  • Cinnamon sugar with butter
  • Crunchy peanut butter

Cheers to toast! What’s favorite toast toppings?
